<p>Artists today engage with a world very different from that of their predecessors: globally connected, technologically advanced and highly diverse. In the last fifty years the Western canon has been displaced as the benchmark for “good” and worthwhile art, opening the door to works intended to challenge viewers, rather than simply to aesthetically please.</p>
<p><span style="line-height: 20.8px;">Researchers from varied disciplines are tackling the topic of inequality — asking questions about its sources and its impacts, as well as the policies and movements under way to reduce it.</span></p>
<p>Nearly half a century ago, student protests led to the creation of Cornell’s Africana Studies and Research Center. Since then, the Africana Center has trained generations of leaders in academia, the professions, business and public service.</p>
<p>If you’ve ever wondered about love (and who hasn’t?), there’s a new university course for you this year. And if you ponder the issue of food justice and how it relates to our tiny town of Ithaca, there’s one for that too.</p><p>Those topics are two of the new ones covered this year through the University Courses Initiative, which was begun in 2012 and will offer 18 courses this year.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Derek Conrad Murray’s MA ’04, PhD ’05 recently published book, <em>Queering Post-Black Art: Artists Transforming African-American Identity After Civil Rights</em> (2016), arose from his interest in “post-blackness,” a term that emerged in the art world in the early 2000s, and immediately became a controversial and hotly-debated topic.</p>
<p>The voices shaping the important conversations of our age, from racial unrest to income inequality and sustainability, are getting a little more diverse, thanks to Cornell University's Public Voices Thought Leadership Fellowship Program. </p>
<p><a href="http://africana.cornell.edu/carole-boyce-davies">Carole Boyce Davies</a>, professor of Africana studies and English, will receive The Caribbean Philosophical Association’s 2017 Frantz Fanon Lifetime Achievement Award at the association’s international conference, June 22-24 in New York City.</p>
<p>A faculty panel will join in a discussion of “I Am Not Your Negro," a new documentary by Raoul Peck.</p>
<p>In response to the recent Executive Order barring U.S. entry to citizens of seven predominantly Muslim countries, Cornell’s Department of Near Eastern Studies will hold a teach-in Feb. 17 in the Groos Family Atrium in Klarman Hall from 10 a.m. to noon. The event is free and the public is welcome.</p>
<p>“The history of the Negro is the history of America, and it is not a pretty story,” says the late writer James Baldwin in director Raoul Peck’s documentary “I Am Not Your Negro.”</p>
<p>The conversation focused on the ways our various identities shape us, from race to sexuality to eating preferences to musical tastes to politics.</p>

Edmondson has been a major contributor to the articulation of Africana studies at Cornell.
From analyzing how labor policies contributed to rapid economic growth in Europe in the 1950s to testing the therapeutic value of virtual reality technology, Cornell social science research projects are receiving assistance from the Institute for the Social Sciences’ (ISS) Small Grants Program.
In politics and activism, popular culture and social media, “black girls and women are hyper-visible,” according to associate professor of Africana studies Oneka LaBennett. They are portrayed “as ‘at risk’ and as cultural trendsetters, yet simultaneously rendered invisible in public policy discourses.”
<p>A celebration of National Poetry Month and language learning on April 21 at the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art featured multilingual poetry, song, dance and an international dessert reception. The goal, said <a href="http://www.lrc.cornell.edu/lrc_info">Dick Feldman</a>, director of the Language Resource Center (LRC), was “to experience the beauty of poetry in many languages and to celebrate success in learning those languages.”</p>
“A History of Official White Supremacy in the Era of Trump,” at 4:30 pm at the Africana Studies and Research Center, 310 Triphammer Rd, will discuss the history of white supremacy and what it means for the future.
The oral history project and field trip were supported by an Engaged Opportunity Grant.
<p>As a first-generation college graduate and a woman of color, Cornell trustee Laura Wilkinson, J.D. ’85, MBA ’86 – former deputy assistant director of the Federal Trade Commission, now an antitrust lawyer and partner in private practice – had little difficulty writing her keynote speech for the fourth annual <a href="https://www.oadi.cornell.edu/">Office of Academic Diversity Initiatives</a>’ (OADI) Honors Awards Ceremony May 5.</p>
<p>Vernacular language scholar John Rickford and Indian architect and educator Brinda Somaya have been named Andrew Dickson White Professors-at-Large for six-year terms effective July 1.</p><p>The appointments were approved by President Martha E. Pollack and the Cornell University Board of Trustees at their May meeting. Faculty members nominate candidates, and a faculty selection committee reviews and recommends the appointments.</p>
